October is such a beautiful month, and this year has been no exception. Every day, the colors of the leaves seem to be more brilliant and amazing against the blue sky. We associate many things with fall; leaves, pumpkin spice lattes, mums, sweaters, and cute boots, but perhaps most of all, autumn brings the word CHANGE to the forefront of my mind. I want to talk about a different kind of change, though. And that is the change that we see taking place among women today.
We think there is so much freedom available when we put all of our energy into embracing the unique identity and purpose God has given each person rather than working to prove ourselves through other means. Jesus is awesome and we get to enjoy His grace, love, and truth! To try and make ourselves anything different is taking away from the One who created our amazing configuration! God doesn’t want us to doubt the abilities he has blessed us with, and this includes the gift of raising a child, be that biologically or through adoption.
Let’s start at the beginning. That’s right, wayyy back at the beginning of creation, and take a look at how God created us fro the start:
“Then the Lord God said, “It is no good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him…So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, ‘This, at last, is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman because she was taken out of Man.” Genesis 2:16, 21-23
One word stands out to me when I read that passage: helper. In today’s society, some people may take that description in a demeaning way, but there is nothing demeaning about it at all! It simply means “one who helps.” God himself is referred to as our help several times throughout scripture (Psalm 54:4). There’s also the fact that Eve was made OUT of Adam (I don’t know about you, but I think it’s pretty awesome that the very first woman came from a single rib!)
Another example in the Bible that demonstrates how God uses us to fulfill His perfect plan can be found in Judges 4. Deborah was a prophet and judge who was leading Israel and inspired them to a mighty victory over the Canaanites. While we don’t know a lot about how she came into these positions, one thing is clear; she was a woman of great faith. So much so that a strong military leader, Barak, was only willing to go into battle if she came with him. We often limit our abilities based on the world’s standards, but the story of Deborah illustrates that God didn’t create us with those restrictions.
Everyone wants to see a present time and a future where a woman will be SUPPORTED when they’re pregnant, parenting, and beyond. We do not want people to be told or believe that children will end their future, whether that be a career, school/training, relationships, or something else. Additionally, when abortion is bound with feminism, we continue to move farther and farther away from our creation story given by God. At Compass, we think to truly be pro-woman, we need to be pro-life!
For sure, our friends, family, and children are watching and are looking to us to see that all life is valued and cherished, and gender has nothing to do with that. I believe those who have gone before us are watching to see what values future generations will bring after they are gone.
As the beauty of the autumn season continues to unfold, let it be a reminder of how we can choose to be a change that will make a positive difference for the future. As women, we need to come alongside one another in support, especially in pregnancy and parenting matters! At Compass, we are here for you. Make an appointment today! (304) 212-2131
